Shisen Hanten | Singapore

Last night I had dinner at Shisen Hanten, a Chinese restaurant, located on the 35th floor of the Mandarin Orchard. I had quite high expectations because the restaurant has been awarded two Michelin stars.

The setting was fairly impressive and the food was good. I had fried prawns that came with a slight touch of batter and mayonnaise. I ordered the extra sticky rice because I am not that great at eating with chopsticks.

At the beginning the service was top, at some point I even had three waitresses looking after me. I guess it was after I had finished my main course that it went downhill. No one checked if I needed something else. Eventually I stacked up all the dishes to signal that I was done.

I did decide to have the mango pudding for dessert. What I didn't like though was the fact that it was served in a very cold container, which gave the impression that it had not been freshly prepared.

What I also found surprising was that they couldn't charge my card from the table. I had to walk to the cashier to enter my pin. Something that I could have ignored but couldn't help noticing was that some customers were wearing trainers (sneakers) and some even Birkenstocks...

I find it hard to believe that Shisen Hanten has not only one but two(!) Michelin stars. The food was good but not exceptional. Insert clueless smiley here.

It looks soooo nice inside! Sometimes you eat at restaurants like that where at first they cater to you non-stop, but after being there a certain time they kind of just go away to other new people or those ordering a lot. :)

  6. Everything did sound like it was going well until you finished with your entree. It's such a shame that the service took such a down turn and that's crazy that they couldn't charge your card from your table. I'd definitely expect better considering the two Michelin stars.

  7. When I started reading your impression of the place I was thinking "oh sounds like a great place". Then the more I read the more I like "ok they could really make a lil more effort if they've had two awards already". The food looks good though. I would really love to try the shrimps.
I hope you have a lovely rest of the week Anouk! :)

  8. The prawns look delicious, although I am not a big fan of mayonnaise--I am shocked about the overall food quality given its Michelin star rating. Thanks for sharing and letting us know. /Madison

  19. Haha, sounds funny. I usually don't pay much attention to the waitress' clothes or shoes, but yes, a restaurant from this range should be flawless.
