Hotel Gatto Bianco | Capri, Italy

Today I am going to show you the hotel that I stayed at in Capri. It's called Gatto Bianco (white cat) and it was located just off the Piazzetta (main square).

I really liked the location, the charming decoration and its history. There has always been a white cat at the hotel because when the owners acquired the hotel many years ago, white cats were coincidentally involved in several fortunate incidents - they saw this as a sign and they decided to call the hotel Gatto Bianco.

Several well-known people have stayed there: Jackie and Aristotle Onassis, Audrey Hepburn and Rita Hayworth.

I felt at home at the hotel and even though my room was tiny, I quickly settled in. I also liked the small balcony I had; not every room came with one.

What could have been better was the bathroom. It was ultra small. Really not suited for large people. While everything else is super well maintained in the hotel, the bathroom could really have benefited from a makeover.

The internet connection was another thing that bothered me. Uploading one photo onto my blog took 5 minutes and 20 seconds. One photo! You can figure out how long it took to create my first Capri post which had approximately 30 photos.

Breakfast was included in my room rate and while it was basic, I never left hungry. The cheese was delicious and the pastries were all crispy and fresh. I would recommend the hotel but I would advise against booking a single room and maybe go for a standard double or superior instead.

What a cute little place, loving the tiles! Unfortunate about the internet, but I've found that's the case in a lot of smaller boutique hotels around Europe.

  11. I like your photography in this post, it's so atmospheric! I can imagine what a nice surprise the balcony in your room must have been, and perhaps the smaller size of your bedroom would have been cosy :)

  13. It is such a beautiful but a bit melancholy city! Perhaps it's the weather that day being a bit over cast? Hope you are enjoying your trip there!

  20. Aside from the WiFi connections and it being quite small, it does look like a charming place to stay, especially love the hotel photos --- and significance behind it all with the cat. <3

  32. what a lovely hotel with character! The tile floors are beautiful! It's wonderful that there is always a white cat in residence... I wonder if they continually get them from animal shelter? Thanks for the honest review about the room though!

  33. This is taken from the hotel's website: "It was in the 1950's, that brothers Giuseppe, Giovanni and Tonino Esposito decided to enlarge the family's guest house. As they walked through the lemon grove where today's hotel is located, they came across a white cat (gatto bianco in Italian) and her brood of newborn kittens.

The day they were due to sign the land contract, a white cat appeared by the bed of their ill father. Another cat-connection? The solicitor's surname was Scannagatti (cat slaughterer!).

There's been a white cat at the hotel ever since."

    It's a fun story!

  34. Not sure where they get the cats from. The current one, Matisse, has been with the hotel since 2006. I hope that it will stay with them for a long time; it's such a cutie.

  35. The name origin is interesting, and the first photo is representative :) Well, yes, internet connection is important when travelling. I don't want to imagine how did it feel to upload 30 photos on a slow connection...
