|Veggie burger at Hitch|
|Vegan burger at Independent Café|
I've just had two subsequent veg burger dinners, one at Hitch on Monday and one at Independent Café yesterday evening. I thought it would be interesting to do a little comparison between the burgers that I had.
Hitch: I ate the veggie burger, which consisted of falafel, vegetables and mushroom. It was tasty but there was a bit too much mayonnaise, which made it quite greasy. Sure, without the mayo, it would have been too dry but it left a heavy feeling on my stomach. This burger came with fries and a side salad. I won't order it again next time I eat at Hitch. They have other interesting options on their menu that I'd rather try. Rating 6.5/10
Independent Café: The vegan burger looked a bit bland at first sight. Once I lifted the top of the bun, all I could see were greens but then I realized that tofu was hidden underneath. Looks can deceive however and after a couple of bites, I very much enjoyed this burger. There was no mayonnaise with it, only oil and vinegar dressing and it tasted very natural and healthy. I would have this burger again as it was very fresh and doesn't leave you with a post-burger-guilt-feeling, if you know what I mean. Fries were optional and I didn't order any. Rating 8/10
I only wanted to compare the burgers and not the two restaurants overall but I nevertheless want to share a couple of things that stood out for me.
Hitch: We received a very warm welcome from our waiter. He was very attentive and brought us drinks right away. After we had told him that we still needed some time to decide what we were going to order, he disappeared and we didn't see him until we had finished our meal. Meanwhile we had to wave to get the attention of another waiter who was less friendly, could tell that we were a little bit annoyed but didn't know how to smooth out the situation. While I was very much impressed by Hitch when I visited last April, I was a little bit disappointed this time. But I am not writing it off; I will still go back if there is an opportunity. And I have been for drinks only as well on a couple of occasions.
Independent Café: The service was efficient without any fuss. The waitress with whom we settled the bill, could have been a bit less abrupt and impersonal though. Yes, I am overly sensitive to these kind of things, which most people wouldn't even notice. Independent has only two vegan options on their menu but there is a super large vegetarian selection apart from that. As a vegetarian, your choice at most restaurants is limited but certainly not at this one.
