Applying foundation: fingers, sponge, brush?

The first time I used liquid foundation was after I had been given free samples. I applied it as I would a cream, with my fingers. Even after I had started regularly using foundation as part of my daily make up routine, I continued doing it the same way. Needless to say, it was a messy affair and half of the liquid would end up covering my finger tips instead of my face.

At some point I discovered sponges and I have found them convenient ever since. It was only a few years ago, however, that I decided to give brushes a try and I was very impressed by what they could do.

The advantages of foundation brushes

  • The foundation spreads quickly and evenly: for me, this is the main advantage
  • You need less liquid than with fingers and sponges
  • You can easily blend two different shades: every so often it happens that I buy a shade that is too dark for my skin. Instead of discarding a full bottle, I just get another one of a lighter shade and then blend the two with the help of the brush
  • There is no mess to wash off your hands after usage
  • Long-lasting tool when cleaned regularly (unlike sponges)

The photo below shows my current two foundation brushes: Sephora PRO foundation brush No 83 (left) and a classic foundation brush, also by Sephora (see similar here). I got the round one recently and it's my favourite because I have never been able to apply foundation in a more efficient manner. It comes with a plastic cap, which is convenient for travelling.

What are your tips for applying foundation?

  2. I've always been one to use my fingers just because I'm a (terribly) lazy person, but on days where I actually use a brush, I can see that the finish is instantly different!

  5. Oh well, I use either brushes or sponges but u know, if I have to be more precise I still prefer sponges (triangle-shaped) as they work like rubber in case u did some mistakes, even on lids and brows! Have a good weekend! xo

I usually start with sponge or brush then blend with fingers! The warmth of fingers really helps smooth it out.

  9. So far I've been using my fingers and still like this way, but admittedly I love the idea of using a brush, too - the results are always pretty good. x

  10. I do like brushes, but I confess that sometimes I apply it with my fingers. Sponges don't work for me, but brushes are excellent!

  19. flat top brushes are my go-to. i like lightly spraying my brush before dabbing it to my liquid foundation so that it doesn't absorb the product right away (also helps in blending in my opinion).

    Have a great week!

  22. I've never tried brushed for applying foundation before but I can see why it would work well. Lately I've been using cushion compacts that come with sponge applicators.

  24. I love foundation brushes (the classic kind is what I use). The brush is definitely the best option, I prefer it over the sponges. But lately I've been using my fingers more (which like you mentioned, I too hate the mess they create) because I am so time poor in the mornings

  26. I don't use foundation, since I have oily skin and it makes it look worse. But when I was at the Avon beauty academy in February, I was told that applying from the center of your face (nose) towards the outer parts is the best way to apply foundation.

  27. I only wear concealer, and I apply it with my fingers because I am always in a rush lol.

I love a good foundation brush as it can make the applications process so much easier and the colour looks so even on my face. When it comes to foundation I prefer mineral ones that are in powder, they are just a bit "easier" on my skin.

For my job I use mostly beauty blenders for fluid or cream foundation in a taping motion. Sometimes i use stipple brushes as well, but only if it is a fluid texture.
Although i mostly use airbrush make up and that's a total different technique.

  33. Thanks for sharing your techniques. I will try beauty blenders, the egg shaped ones, as I have never used them before.
