Bagelstein

Last week I had lunch at Bagelstein at Auchan for the first time. And it was the last time. When I was waiting for my order, I saw the person who was preparing my salmon bagel pick off and eat the crispy cheese on top of the bread. As he was adding cream cheese, some of it got on his glove and he licked it off and touched the vegetables that he added to my bagel. Eek! Right now I realize that I should have complained there and then and not have eaten the bagel instead of ranting about it here and write an unfavourable review. But I was so shocked in that moment that I failed to react. What would you have done?

  1. Eek...how disgusting. I am sorry for this experience. Some people don't know about hygiene. Have a great day and week!

  2. OMG Anouk! *insert dead face emoji x1000000* Truthfully, I'd do the same. I hate confrontation and would not have said anything too. Hopefully I'd be accompanied with my friend Liz who would have screamed the roof off hahahaha! I don't think I've ever heard of such things! Who picks food off a sandwich and eats it in front of people? Hasn't the other staff seen him/her do this? Why don't they say something! Isn't that against hygiene laws or something? God you poor, poor girl.

    1. Yes, the other staff where chatting with him whilst he was 'preparing'... so what he was doing seemed normal to them. Not sure about hygiene laws. I don't think that they are as strict as in they are in the US for example :(

  3. omg i'm overly disgusted!i would have been in a state of shock as well, i mean picking of cheese from a sandwhich?what the heck? Sharing your experience on the blog definitely seems like a good idea as it will reach out so more people and they might become aware of this unhygienic behavior

  4. Yuckkk!! I have been to Bagelstein once... when I ordered my bagel the guy said if I can sit down and place my order later when he finishes preparing some bagels, as he can`t concentrate right now and he will forget what I asked for!!! Okay.... Normally I would leave straight away but this time I decided to wait. Luckily I haven`t seen how he prepared it. When I was leaving he was just sitting on the mini fridge and pressing his phone... I like the decoration and the concept of the place, but they should send the guy to some hospitality/cook/waiter course. :)) Or is he the owner?!? :))

    1. I don't think he is the owner as the shop is part of a chain. Sorry to hear that you didn't have a great experience either :(

  5. I haven't seen this place yet, but, judging from the concept, it would be on my to-visit list as I absolutely love bagels! I'm really glad to read this post, as well as the comments. Now I'll know not to go there, because it truly sounds disgusting and unprofessional.. As for your reaction, I think I would try to say something if I find the right words, but I can totally understand that some situations are so shocking that you just stay quiet and instead spend the whole day being angry about it (happens to me all the time!) In that case, social media and the blog are good places to vent out :)

    1. It's true, with hindsight the whole story seems even more gross to me... Shame that we have few bagel places in Lux and that this one is now over for me.

  6. Wow now that is a bagel. This looks so yummy. I am quite critical of bagels though as I come from the land of good bagels. I have only actually found once place in Berlin that makes bagels like they should be made.

Lol and now I read your experience, so sorry it is disgusting for me and I think you should seriously complain about it, in the meantime they will get a bad review. I dont know what I would have done at ur side..maybe I would have left it :/

  11. Omg, that sounds terrible! Did you eat the bagel in the end? There must be some kind of policy for workers in the good industry, ugh. I would've complained for sure!

  12. Disgusting!!! I tend to do the same unfortunately - I am not so brave to complain on the same moment, maybe because I don't realize how bad it was - but then when I started to think about it... bleah!
I noted that there are several waiters that unfortunately are not attentive to hygienic rules in Luxembourg... maybe because they are not trained to be waiters and above all in these small places they have just a temporary job..
Not sure I will fancy visit this place even if the pictures look great

  13. The bagel looks delicious, however you experience is kind of horror. I understand and empathise how you were so shocked, hopefully if it ever happens again you'll make a complaint. I think I would ask nicely to make me another and change the gloves. ahahah I don't know for sure

    Have a great day dear!

  21. Oh man, that's crazy! I don't know that I would have been able to react to that on the spot either, but I probably wouldn't have eaten the sandwich or asked for a new one. At least now we all know! It does look really good though.
