My 2014 travels

2014 travel didn't entirely go according to plan... I had wanted to go on another California solo road trip but I found myself jetting around Europe to places that I had already been to. The only new places I discovered this year were Vienna, Rio and Budapest. Here's a recap.

Vienna was a wonderful discovery. But a weekend was not enough to see everything and I when I left, I felt like I had to come back one day to see more and to visit nearby Bratislava as well.

Rio was good fun. I don't regret going there. But getting mugged on Valentine's Day will probably stick in my mind for the rest of my life.

My first of three trips to London this year... I enjoyed the delightful afternoon tea at The Ritz. I remember that the weather was great. I always have a good time in London.

The first time I went to Berlin a few years ago, I only stayed for one night. Certainly not enough to get an idea of this huge city. This time I stayed for one week but I still have to go back one day and visit more.

I didn't have a great impression of Copenhagen when I travelled there the first time. But I was willing to give it another try and this year in May had a superb time. Lesson learned: don't write off a city too quickly. Sometimes going back can change your opinion by 180.

I did two very brief trips to Paris; one lasted a couple of hours when I was between flights on my way to Rio and this one, which only lasted 22 hours. It was nice to have dinner at Kong and to do shopping at the Galeries Lafayette. I'm already looking forward to going back to Paris in March!

This was the city that everybody seemed to have been to, except me. I stayed at the beautiful Corinthia Hotel and saw the sights that until then I had only known from photos.

I think this was my sixth visit to the Italian capital of fashion. It's always a pleasure to see my friend who lives there and to go shopping. I hope that I will find an occasion to return in 2015.

London (2)

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip to London. The city is just the best in the summer! I'm already longing to be back there.

Madrid (1)

My first trip out of three to Madrid last summer. I hadn't been since I was at secondary school when I lived there with a Spanish family to improve my Spanish. It was a nice re-discovery of the city.

London (3)

My last trip to London for the year. I remember doing more shopping and visiting museums.

Madrid (2)

I got to watch a football match in this impressive stadium. It was an unforgettable experience.

Madrid (3)

A week later, I was back in Madrid for the last time. I am not a regular beer drinker but I remember having lots of cervezas and eating non stop.

Another week later, I found myself in Rome. In 2006 I had promised myself not to return to this city for the next ten years but sometimes things don't go according to your plan.

I had good memories of Stockholm but the first time when I visited, I was with a group of several girls and didn't do much sightseeing. This time I had a list of museums and areas that I wanted to go to. Everything was great but if I had to go again, I would when days are longer.

This was my last trip of this year. A nice change of scenery but very cold!

In 2015 I will make sure that I include at least one sunny destination in late autumn to alleviate the winter blues! My next trip is New York in February... unless I decide to go somewhere sometime in January.
