On Saturday evening the seventh edition of the Eurovision Gala took place at the Casino in Mondorf. Conchita Wurst, who won Eurovision for Austria earlier this year, should have performed and I had been looking forward to seeing her live but she had to cancel and apologized in a video.
The first part of the event consisted in 16 local singers competing against each other by performing past Eurovision songs (not necessarily songs that won).
During the second part, past Eurovision winners took the stage. Alexander Rybak won for Norway in 2009. He holds the record of the largest number of votes at the contest ever. He is rumoured to be a diva but all I can say is that his stage presence is simply amazing. He is currently working on releasing a song for a DreamWorks production and he told the audience that he is very excited about this.
Next up was Linda Martin who had won the contest for Ireland in 1992. In case you are wondering what the black shadow on the right is: it's the hair of the Luxembourg Minister of Culture. My friend who presented and had organized the event had kindly given me a VIP seat. It was right behind said Minister (who has big hair) and our Deputy Prime Minister who was also present.
The final big act was Loreen who won for Sweden in 2012 with her song 'Euphoria'. At first I wasn't a big fan of her music but now I am warming up to it. She is quite unique and has great style.
Finally, a jury casted votes and selected Inês Pinto as the winner of the Eurogala competition. It was really well-deserved because this young lady has an amazing voice and her performance was flawless.
It was a very entertaining night. I would definitely consider attending again. Hopefully Conchita can make it next year. That's what she promised. Wishing you a great week.
