Vienna Day 1

I arrived in Vienna in the afternoon but I was so tired that I had to have a nap at the hotel. If I hadn't booked a ticket for the theatre, I would probably have stayed in. By the time I left the hotel, it was already dark.

I have been to Austria twice: once to Tyrol and once to Salzburg but never to the capital. The first thing that struck me was the breathtaking architecture.

As much as I love doing different things for the sake of bragging claiming that I've done them, I just couldn't bring myself to go to the Opera, which would have been a cultural top thing to do in Vienna. In Russia I've endured Prince Igor, The Queen of Spades, Mazepa, The Fiery Angel, and Madama Butterfly - that's enough opera for the rest of my life.

I chose to go to the Volkstheater instead, where a German version of Gogol's The Government Inspector was being performed. A decision that I didn't regret! The performance was hilarious, entertaining, and incredibly captivating.

The theatre interior looked stunning.

There were no dramatic stage transformations; the entire play took place on these stairs. It's amazing that none of the actors tripped by moving, and sometimes running, up and down.

There was no break but the champagne bar was open for drinks after the play had ended. I headed back to the hotel though to catch up on more sleep.

  5. I've been to Wien once, about 8 years ago. I remember the Museums area, so lively and full of young artists.
In case you haven't yet, you have to visit Sissi's palace!
I've had enough opera from the time I lived in Hamburg, though not as glamorous as Russia.
    The theater looks stunning, breathtaking.

  25. The fact that you traveled to Vienna and booked a ticket for the theater, places you in the top 10 of my favorite bloggers!! I love, love, love the theatre. I'm also going to Vienna later this month for the first time and I also booked a ticked for the theatre. I'm going to see King Lear at the Burgtheater and I'm psyched about it.

Great that you also saw things in Moscow! I'm dying to see ballet at the Bolshoi!
