Weekend in Milan Part 1

Milan was a trip that I had "spontaneously" booked a month ago. I hadn't been for almost two years and a half and it was time to hang out with my Italian friend G who I hadn't seen since Bologna a year ago.

Whenever I'm in Milan, I let G run the show: she will suggest nice restaurants, come up with spur-of-moment ideas, and through her I get to meet all sorts of different people.

On Saturday we had lunch at Ravizza, a historic shop turned shop - restaurant.

I ordered pasta with beans and lentils.

G had meat patties with potatoes and tomato rolls.

Although there were inviting dessert options, we resisted these and went to Ciocolattitaliani.

We had a caldo freddo (hot cold) chocolate caffè. It was more cold than hot - I believe that's how it's meant to be - but very delicious!

After that we walked through the city. It was so crowded and I don't remember it ever being that packed with people. I found it more stressful than walking through Manhattan.

We did some window shopping at Vergelio. They have a very nice selection of Italian designer shoes. Believe it or not, I managed to proudly walk out without buying anything.

In the evening it was time for the aperitivo (drinks and snacks before dinner). We went to a gelateria - cafe that isn't selling ice cream during winter. I had a bitter rosso, a red sparkling drink that tasted a bit like Campari. The owner looked like a ten years younger version of George Clooney with a ponytail. He was very kind and offered us the drinks.

We then had take away pizzas from a restaurant that was entirely run by Chinese. I get a lot of funny remarks thrown at me because I look Asian but I find it interesting to sometimes catch myself making prejudices. So I told myself that I would be open-minded and as long as the pizza was good, I wouldn't mind who had made it. Well, the pizzas were edible but I've eaten better ones...

I took a cab back to my hotel and in the lobby I walked past this sweet Christmas deco.

This was my room at the Hilton Milan Hotel.

The room came with the standard Peter Thomas Roth toiletries.

Here are a few photos I had taken during my flight to Milan: view of the Alps and Rio Maggiore.

Part two will be up soon.

  25. Milan is a fun city to visit. I enjoyed my visit there too. So many beautiful shops and delicious food. But I agree that it is a busy City with so many people. Well, it's the place to be for great Italian shopping. Looks like you had fun with your friend.
