Music to my ears (NY IV)

The Phantom of the Opera had been on my musicals-to-see list since childhood. I went to the evening show last Tuesday and I have to say that it exceeded my expectations. The performance was perfect: the singing, the dancing, the entire mise-en-scène. I didn't know much about the plot and this added even more surprise and suspense to the experience.

Until then, Cats and Rent had been my favourite musicals but now Phantom has topped them. I fully understand why it is the longest-running show in Broadway history.

Photos were not allowed during the performance but I managed to take a few before and after.

The week before I went to the Broadway in Bryant Park event where cast members of current musicals were performing songs from their shows. As I was late, I only got to see Storyville, Avenue Q (which I had seen in London a few years ago) and Rock of Ages. It was magical to see this beautiful concert in the midst of skyscrapers and busy Manhattan traffic. The entire audience was mesmerized by the amazing voices and stage presence of these talented performers.

What are your favourite musicals and/or which ones are on your to-see list?

  21. Good for you that you finally realized your dream to watch the Phantom of the Opera. Love all of the songs on that Broadway show. Phantom of the Opera is my favourite along with Cats and Les Miserables. I might watch Cats again here in Toronto this weekend. I am looking forward to watching it again.

  22. What a beautiful theatre! I have seen Cats but not in a long time, my favorite musical...hmm that's a hard one. I really love the stage adaptation of The Lion King, as well as the music in Bye Bye Birdie, but my all time favorite is probably Hello Dolly!
