Italy Day 14: Cinque Terre and Hotel Due Gemelli

I visited the five villages that make up Cinque Terre (five lands) and I present them in my personal top five order:

5. Corniglia

Corniglia was charming but to get there I had to climb up 399 steps which is a real test to anyone's fitness. There were several nice ice cream shops and you can see Manarola from far away.

4. Vernazza

Vernazza has some very interesting steep and narrow backstreets. You get a good view over the village if you are climbing up the many steps to the Doria Castle. Of all villages Vernazza is the one that needs a painting make-over most.

3. Monterosso

The village that least resembles the other four. It looked like a very tiny version of Miami Beach and seemed to be the best kept up place of all.

2. Manarola

Manarola is one of the must see villages that I see if visiting Cinque Terre. Within the village there are several spots that offer great views for taking photos.

1. Riomaggiore

If you only visit one village, then it would have to be Riomaggiore. It is the largest and most colourful.

Hotel Due Gemelli

I stayed at the three star family-run Due Gemelli for two nights. Not many hotels in the area have car park facilities but this hotel does. It looked like out of an episode of Mad Men and at first I wasn't sure what to think of it.

In the end I had a very nice stay there. In the evenings I'd have dinner at their restaurant, spaghetti with tomato sauce and a glass of red wine. It was a very informal place but in a good way. The atmosphere was very pleasant and warm.

  1. Beautiful photos...and I love the story about Venus Williams! I probably wouldn't have been as cool as you, I would have giggled and asked her for a photo and annoyed her probably!

  3. what an interesting surprise sitting next to Venus Williams. Regarding the hotel: even though it's not a 5 star facility it sounds like you had a pleasant stay. I'd love to visit Cinque Terre one day. I also followed you on Instagram ;) Have a great week!

  5. Oh my goodness, I've only been away for a week and you're already on your way home! Must catch up with all your previous posts on your travels. What a nice surprise sitting next to Venus Williams. Did you take any self portraits with her strategically in a tiny corner of the camera frame? hehe I think that's what I would have done.

I want to visit here so badly..it looks like the entire towns are built on steps. that's so cool you sat beside Venus Williams! I wouldn't have known how to behave either..I probably would've done the same as you (unless it was someone I really liked) I imagine they get a lot of fans coming up to them all the time

  19. You're already on your way home?! It seems to have passed by so soon. Wonder where you're off to next :) I would have been happy with that hotel room, don't know anything about the hotel but that view is spectacular. Amusing story lool I don't know if I would have recognised her and if I did I would just treat her like any other passenger sitting next to me!

  26. Oh I see you are back! Still need to do some catching up thought! So 5 Terre is so pretty, prettier through your lens and I see you did not miss ONE of the 5 villages. Way to go! When we went we spent too much time wondering and then by the beach that I think we only did 2-3 places, can't even remember for sure which one but by the description I would say we say for sure (or at least we enjoyed its beach) Monterosso and Vernazza and for some reason Rio Maggiore sounds familiar! Might be because it is the prettiest as you say (hope I saw it, maybe an excuse to go back!!).
AND OMG about Venus! You are so good to have let her alone, I think I would have had to say something!!!

  35. It's not every day you get to sit next to someone famous on a flight! I wouldn't have said anything either.
Those villages all look so colourful and beautiful. Quite different to the rest of Italy you've showed us.
Hope you had a great holiday, but I bet you're glad to be home :)

  37. This is one of my all-time favourite little corners of the world. We hiked all five towns on my honeymoon, stopping in each one for something different to eat...coffee...an amazing seafood risotto in Manarola, salad, gelato....etc. We were pretty stuffed by the end of the hike, but at least we also had a good work out. My rankings would be very similar to yours. Great post!
